RHODE ISLAND
XXV
6, 7, 8 December, 2009
The annual Wahconah Regional High School Latin students' trip to Rhode Island and Providence Plantations (official name of the nation's smallest state) is in its twenty-fifth year. Each participant is asked to read the contents of this attachment before leaving for the trip. It would be a good idea to print two copies, one for yourself, and one for your parents. Most trip questions should be answered, but don't be afraid to ask Mr. Bradshaw any questions you might have.

TRIP RULES FOR ALL STUDENTS
PREFATORY NOTE: Although the following rules and regulations
for this trip seem numerous, they have been arrived at after many years
of experience with such an undertaking. They are not intended to
be punitive, but will be enforced without hesitation, so that our 108
participants will enjoy a well-organized, sensible, and educational experience
in Rhode Island. We thank all students for their co-operation in advance
for helping us to make this annual Wahconah tradition our best!
1. All students are asked to don appropriate attire throughout the trip. ABSOLUTELY NO SHORTS THIS YEAR! No hats should be worn during any scheduled indoor activity, including meals at the hotel and the restaurant.
2. A phone tree has been established, and will be put into operation by chaperones only in the event of an emergency weather delay. You will be called either Saturday night or very early Sunday morning if there is to be a two hour delay in departure time. Shopping at the mall, then, would be eliminated. The trip will NOT be cancelled unless emergency conditions warrant.
3. Take warm clothing along on the trip. You never know how cold it might be
near the water! It has often rained or snowed through the years.
Be aware of the weather forecast, and bring umbrellas or rain-gear, just in case.
4. Once again, NO VIDEOS OF ANY KIND will be permitted on the buses. No
exceptions!
5. In an emergency, parents may call 1-888-464-6789. This is the Peter Pan Bus Lines emergency number, and should be dialed only for a bona fide emergency!!
6. THIS IS PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE OF ALL, AND WILL
BE ENFORCED WITHOUT EXCEPTION!
In the event that any student violates a rule of conduct set forth in the
2009-2010 Wahconah Regional High School Student Handbook, and if that
violation is of a serious or criminal nature, the student's parent will be
called, and expected to drive immediately to Rhode Island to remove
the student from the care of the trip's supervising adults. Any possession
or distribution of illegal narcotics, including alcohol, may result in arrest
and prosecution by local, federal, campus, or state authorities in Rhode Island.
School personnel will inspect all student luggage and carry-ons.
(Female chaperones will check girls' luggage, and male chaperones will check boys' luggage.)
No exceptions will be made to policy #6, established in 1997 for the well-being of all aboard this trip.
7. Students will, without exception, treat hotel, bus, and visitation properties
with the utmost respect, taking pride in themselves and Wahconah Regional
High School. If there is any damage to private property, the cost for repair
will be borne by those who have caused it.
8. All participants are expected to be on time, every time, to ensure a smooth trip.
Attendance will be taken every single time the group reconvenes on the buses.
NO OPEN CONTAINERS WILL BE ALLOWED BEFORE BOARDING THE BUSES. If you plan
to have food on the bus, please take along a small garbage bag.
9. Chaperones will inspect rooms during bed-check, not merely knock on
doors. Any student who leaves his/her hotel room after bed-check will
be subject to the penalties outlined in # 6. Get all snacks, etc.
before bed-check. Please treat the Newport Harbor Hotel as your home
away from home. This hotel has treated us in a very special way through the years,--especially given what the regular room rates are--and we owe them the behavior expected of mature and respectful guests. Telephones are to be used for emergency purposes only. The front desk has been asked to report abuse of telephones to the chaperons. Adult-oriented stations have
been removed from the television line-up. No student is to order pay-television channels.
No ordering out for food. In short, NO LEAVING ROOMS AFTER BED-CHECK.
10. All students will be required to wear the trip sweatshirts at the Providence Place Mall Sunday afternoon and Tuesday morning/afternoon. The mall has a very strict policy for teenagers, and your sweatshirts will allow them to identify you, as we have given the mall advance notice of our visit.
CIVILITY
There is one formula for a successful trip that is a sine qua non--civility. We
have fourteen year old students on their first trip, and eighteen year old students
on their fourth. We have ten chaperons. We will be with our bus drivers
for three days. The drivers have a very difficult job, and we expect you to treat them with total cooperation and respect.
We will be in small private gatherings, and large public ones.
It is, therefore, incumbent on every one of us to treat each other with dignity
and friendliness. Anyone who can not do this should think about staying home!
Don't be someone whose selfish behavior spoils everyone's good time. This
trip is about education first, and the fun is all part of it. The most important
lesson of all is the one we get from sharing with others, and tolerating their
differences. To that end, the twenty -fifth annual Wahconah Regional High
School Latin students’ trip to Rhode Island will dedicate itself!
N.B.--Any student who is too ill to travel on Sunday, should NOT attend!!
All medications must be in clearly marked containers. Students
should have enough spending money for three lunches and shopping.
Refunds for this trip are not possible, since all venues must be paid
the total amount promised!
