Latin IV Honors Mr. Bradshaw 2009 Lucretius Project
Deadlines:
Tuesday, 24 March--Identify area of interest (that day)
Thursday, 26 March--Projects assigned by lottery and Confirm/select companion Lucretius passage
Tuesday, 31 March—Identify project modus operandi/describe what you will do
Wednesday, 1 April---Thursday, 16 April--prepare translation of selected Lucretius passage and project (during class and at home)
Monday, 27 April--Presentations begin assigned by 26 March lottery
Tuesday, 12 May--Visit/lecture by our text book author Professor Bonnie Catto, Assumption College (tentative)
Thursday, 21 May--Presentations end no later than this date
N.B.--Our rotating schedule, and unpredictable weather may move one or more
of the above dates to the next calendar day if Latin IV does not meet as scheduled. All students' project grades will be entered into the fourth term average.
Project requirements:
· Student's own translation of the selected passage from Lucretius;
· The equivalent of seven (minimum) documented hours' research into area of interest;
· A lesson plan for presentation of the passage to all students in class;
· A brief, but comprehensive quiz for student assessment submitted with
the class lesson;
· A bibliography listing all resources of any kind used for the project;
· A minimum instruction time of thirty minutes on the day of the project--
this may include the Latin lesson and companion presentation, but not the quiz;
Students are permitted the full period for their presentations, if they wish;
· A copy of the Latin passage for every member of the class, prepared well in
advance, and any other pertinent materials--the instructor will not provide these
materials;
· A summary (homework) of each project presented, and your reactions to it;
· Time permitting, a follow-up discussion on the day of your project;
· Strict adherence to the MCL Department code of academic integrity. (Same as those of the English Department, with an additional caveat against using on-line translations as one’s own.)
Rubric:
· Part I--50%--100 points TRANSLATION OF LUCRETIUS PASSAGE AND TEACHING IT TO THE CLASS (Same criteria as found in the Sight Translation Rubric), including the quiz
· Part II--50%--100 points COMPANION PIECE TO THE LUCRETIUS PASSAGE SELECTION
Part I will be judged for : accuracy of translation, adequacy of materials for
class members, creative pedagogy engaging all students,
usefulness of your assessment tool (quiz)
Part II will be judged for: creativity, clarity of presentation, direct and appropriate
applicability to the Lucretius passage
Project Weight: three hundred points (100 point scale); all student quizzes given to peers will count toward the grade, unless deemed unacceptable by the instructor.
